Cast out of his nest for being unlike any other, Illuminato — a tiny hummingbird born without a beak — must navigate a world that fears what it cannot grasp. Between dripping caverns, moonlit flowers, and encounters with creatures pushed to the edges of existence, he begins to sense that what seemed a flaw may, in fact, be the beginning of a new way of being.
Guided by a white bat who once faced his own exile, Illuminato learns to fly differently, to listen deeply, and to see beyond appearances. As his body adapts and something unforeseen begins to bloom where his beak should have been, he realizes that difference carries its own form of wisdom.
By the end of his journey, Illuminato’s transformation echoes through the valley, awakening life and meaning in places long forgotten.
Illuminato was a finalist for the 1st José Nicolau Gregorin Filho Award for Young Adult Literature, presented by the Brazilian Writers’ Union (UBE).
